Change keys without losing the beat

Moving to a new key adds a second task to keeping time. Keep the pattern short so you can pay attention to the change itself.

1 · 2 · 3 · 4 · 4 · 3 · 2 · 1

  1. Read the pattern first

In the free sample, choose Change notes. Its eight steps are 1–2–3–4–4–3–2–1. Notice the repeated 4 in the middle: play it twice, releasing between the two presses.

  2. Find your four keys

On a computer, A, S, D and F play keys 1, 2, 3 and 4. On a touch screen, use the numbered buttons. Before starting, find each key slowly. The numbers describe this browser exercise; they are not instructions for the app’s piano layout.

  3. Keep the comfortable tempo

Use a tempo you can manage in the steady-pulse exercise. Select Start practice, wait for the four-beat count-in and play each numbered step once. Follow the highlighted step rather than rushing to finish the sequence.

  4. Compare like with like

Repeat the same pattern at the same tempo. Notice whether the repeated 4 or the return towards 1 needs attention. Change one thing at a time: keep the tempo while learning the order, then try a small increase only when comfortable.

Select Stop whenever you need a break. An interrupted pattern does not add a completed session; earlier completed results remain. If you leave or hide the sample tab during a run, the sample stops rather than continuing in the background.

Next, practise leaving silent beats between the numbered steps.
