Find a steady pulse in five minutes

Start with one small task: play the same key on eight even beats. You can practise the timing before adding key changes or trying a melody.

  1. Get ready

Open the free sample and choose Steady pulse. The numbered on-screen keys also work with A, S, D and F on a computer keyboard. Key 1 corresponds to A. These are relative practice keys, not named piano notes.

  2. Choose a comfortable tempo

Begin at 50 BPM, the sample’s lowest setting, or another pace that feels comfortable. Keep this tempo for the first few attempts. Preview tones are optional and off by default; the highlighted steps let you practise visually.

  3. Use the count-in

Select Start practice. Watch the four-beat count-in without playing, then tap key 1 once for each of the eight highlighted steps. Release between taps. Holding a key down does not replace eight separate presses.

  4. Repeat one thing

Finish the pattern and notice where the timing became uneven. Repeat at the same tempo, concentrating on that part. If you can repeat comfortably, try two BPM faster. There is no need to increase the tempo every session.

The browser’s pattern score reflects this sample’s timing window. It is not a calibrated assessment of musical ability. A lower score can be a reason to slow down, check the highlighted step or try a different input device.

When the pulse feels comfortable, keep the same tempo and try the key-change guide.
